The US has acquired the highest number of deaths related to ladder accidents that the world has ever witnessed. Nine million people each year are taken to the emergency room of hospitals because of a fall from a ladder. A lot of these individuals are homeowners who are trying to clean their gutters or gutter screens and fall while in the process.

This is precisely the reason why homeowners should necessarily hire a professional in doing the task because it isn’t that easy. However, since there are times that homeowners really need to do the job on their own, here are some recommendations that homeowners could use in order to maintain safety while climbing a ladder.

1. Never Climb When Sick

If you feel nauseous, dizzy or tired and unwell, then you shouldn’t try to climb up a ladder. Climbing will not only make you feel worse but it could also increase the risk of falling.

2. Not in a Bad Weather

If there is a strong storm expected to arrive in your place any time soon, then you must reschedule your climbing to clean your gutter. High winds, rain or snowfall and other related weather conditions could increase the risk of you falling down from a ladder. Thus, you have to pursue climbing as soon as the weather conditions improve.

3. Wear the Right Shoes

One of the reasons why many homeowners fall off a ladder is because they often slide their feet while climbing each step. This problem on friction is more often caused by a misuse in footwear. When you are planning to climb up a ladder, you have to make sure that you are using a slip-resistant shoes with a heavy weight. Shoes with leather soles are slippery at best thus, you shouldn’t use it while climbing.

2. Right Size of Ladder

The capacity of your ladder should be higher than your total weight or the weight of those individuals who’ll use it for climbing and the weight of the equipment that are going to be used to do the task. Furthermore, the ladder should suffice the height requirement for the task to be done in order to avoid the climber stepping onto some rung in accomplishing the job.

4. Ladder Placement

Another important detail to look after is the placement of the ladder on the ground. You have to see to it that the ladder is placed on a firm and level ground and not in an uneven or slippery ground.

5. Not in a Closed Door

If you are going to climb up a ladder, you have to make sure that it isn’t placed near a closed door. This is because chances are, these closed doors are going to be opened in the duration your climb which may cause the ladder to dislodge.

If you don’t have any experience in climbing up a ladder, you have to look for experience with ladders who have the right amount of experience with ladders in order to ensure your safety. But if you really want the experience, just do it the right way.
